BMW 5 Series Safety

The ratings for the 2018 model isn't out yet, but it stands to reason that it's going to be an improvement on prior years - that's the point - and the 2017 model of BMW 5 Series sedan received a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. This is hands-down the highest accolade a vehicle can receive from this organization.

Getting a Top Safety Pick+ rating requires that a vehicle pass a battery of tests unlike any other. These tests are designed to put a car through a vast series of trials to check every last aspect of the car's safety, from whether it can withstand a frontal collision to how easy its child seat anchors are to use, to whether you'll survive a rollover, to the functioning of the airbags.

Passing the Tests

The IIHS has five major tests to examine the crash-worthiness of a vehicle. These are the small overlap and moderate overlap front tests, side crash tests, the roof strength test and the seat and head restraint test. The top score in each of these tests is Good, and the 5 Series scored this rating on every single one of these tests.

In addition, for the first time the IIHS has begun to test headlights for visibility in high and low beam settings, and when the optional LED projectors added from the Premium and Lightning Packages, the headlights get a Good rating as well.

In terms of child anchors, the 5- series got the second best score, the organization citing that they were easy to find and attached and provided very strong anchor points.
