2018 BMW 3 Series vs 4 Series: Overview

Generally speaking, the BMW 4 Series is the sportier sister of the 3 Series. This means the 4 Series offers a more athletic ride with an optional coupe or convertible body type, but the 3 Series offers more passenger space and a hatchback option. However, both choices are suitable for your daily drives-it just comes down to personal preference!

2018 3 Series vs 4 Series: Interior Design and Space

In both cabins of the 3 Series and 4 Series, you'll find high quality materials that give you the look and feel of modern-meets-classic luxury. Synthetic leather seats come standard, and you can upgrade to power-adjustable front seats and leather upholstery throughout.

The 3 Series seats five passengers in all body styles (Sedan, Sports Wagon, or Gran Turismo), and offers ample backseat legroom, with 35.1 inches of room to stretch out. The 4 Series offers 33.7 inches of legroom in the rear seats, and sits either four or five passengers, depending if you opt for the coupe, convertible, or Gran Coupe.

Power and Performance

Both the BMW 3 Series and 4 Series offer four different trim levels, each equipped with a different engine option. The base engine of the 3 Series in the 320i trim is a 2.0L four-cylinder that puts out 180 horsepower, while the base of the 4 Series is a 2.0L engine that produces 248 horsepower.

And the power only goes up from there. Both models are close in terms of fuel economy, with the 3 Series achieving an EPA-estimated 24 city/35 highway MPG, while the 4 Series drops slightly with an EPA-estimated 24 city/34 highway MPG, both in base trims.

Technology Features in the BMW 3 Series and 4 Series

With both the BMW 3 Series and 4 Series, you get BMW's iDrive infotainment system standard 6.5-inch display screen with Bluetooth® accessibility and a USB port, so that you're always connected to your smartphone music and apps.

Technology upgrades for both models include Apple CarPlay™, a 16-speaker sound system, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and navigation system, so you'll never miss a beat when taking your ride to the city or the beach.
