BMW X3 vs X5-Performance
Though they’re both SUVs, the BMW X3 vs. X5 are found in different classes based on size. They’re each designed for a different type of SUV shopper and satisfy different needs.
The BMW X3 is equipped with a 2.0L turbo-four that produces 248 horsepower. It comes standard with all-wheel drive and transfers power through an eight-speed automatic transmission. A 355-horsepower turbo-six is also available as a high-performance option.
The BMW X5 is equipped with a 300-horsepower, 3.0L turbo-six paired to a sport-tuned eight-speed automatic transmission. A 445-horsepower V8 and a 3.0L turbodiesel six-cylinder are also available. All-wheel drive is standard on all models.
Though the BMW X5 has more powerful engines, it’s also a much larger and heavier vehicle than the X3. Both engines have the necessary power to maneuver these big vehicles with remarkable acceleration, and the agile handling and smooth ride are consistent across the series.
Comfort and Space
Both vehicles seat five people, but they make different use of their available space. Choosing between the two is a matter of preference and needs.
The BMW X5 and the X3 have nearly identical front and rear legroom, but the X5 offers a bit more shoulder room in both rows, as well as an optional third row. That said, the X3’s front and rear headroom outperforms most of its competitors, including the X5.
If cargo is a concern, the X5 boasts a full 14 ft3 more cargo space with the seats folded and a few more cubic feet with the seats upright. They both offer a power liftgate and multiple small storage areas throughout the cabin for additional cargo.
Because they’re part of the same series, the BMW X5 and the BMW X3 share much of the same standard equipment, such as power accessories, a rearview camera, and synthetic leather upholstery. The X5 is better equipped though, including more technology and convenience features for lower trim levels.
Both vehicles have the intuitive iDrive system, however, which includes a high-resolution touchscreen, easy-to-navigate menu, and smartphone integration. This system connects to all your devices and media, as well as providing hands-free calling, navigation, and an emergency assistance feature.
