BMW X5 MPG by Model
All in all, the BMW X5 comes in five unique models. Each model brings with it something unique, whether it be the engine under the hood or interior comfort features. Additionally, you’re going to see some slight variation in fuel economy across the five X5 models.
Here’s what you can look forward to from each 2022 X5 model:
- X5 sDrive40i: EPA-estimated 21 city/26 highway MPG*
- X5 xDrive40i: EPA-estimated 21 city/25 highway MPG*
- X5 M50i: EPA-estimated 16 city/22 highway MPG*
- X5 M: EPA-estimated 13 city/18 highway MPG*
You may have noticed that although there are five X5 models, only four are listed here. Well, let’s look a little further into that.
BMW X5 xDrive45e
The one model left off here is the xDrive45e, the plug-in hybrid X5. The reason this was left off is because instead of your standard fuel economy, it features an electric driving range.
There are two ways to look at the fuel efficiency of the xDrive45e. First, you can read it as having an EPA-estimated 20 combined MPGe.* Alternatively, to get a better sense of just how far you can go with it, you can look at its EPA-estimated 30-mile all-electric range.*
Powering the drive and efficiency of the xDrive45e is a 3.0L BMW TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder engine with an integrated electric motor. Despite providing such an efficient ride, this model still showcases an incredible punch in the form of 389 combined horsepower and 443 lb-ft of combined torque.
Additional BMW X5 Engine & Performance Specs
So, let’s take a look at what makes the other BMW X5 models tick. Across the four gas models, you’ll find one of two engines. With the sDrive40i and xDrive40i, you’ll find a 3.0L BMW M TwinPower Turbo 6-cylinder engine under the hood. For the M50i and M models, a 4.4L BMW M TwinPower Turbo V8 engine comes standard.
No matter which model you drive, or which engine is under the hood, you’re going to enjoy astonishing power and torque behind the wheel. Much like we did with fuel efficiency, let’s see how power showcases across each X5 model:
- X5 sDrive40i: 335 horsepower – 331 lb-ft of torque
- X5 xDrive40i: 335 horsepower – 331 lb-ft of torque
- X5 M50i: 523 horsepower – 553 lb-ft of torque
- X5 M: 600 horsepower – 553 lb-ft of torque
As you can see, there are some clear power upgrades across the 2022 X5 models. However, the more power you opt for, the lower your BMW X5 MPG is going to be. Regardless, the X5 offers plenty of opportunity to combine power and efficiency. It also offers seamless control and the chance to boost fuel efficiency with the 8-speed sport automatic transmission, complete with sport and manual shift modes and convenient steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
With the M model, you’ll see a slight variation with an 8-speed M Sport STEPTRONIC transmission, which offers an additional Drivelogic mode. This unique setting allows you to take the customization of your transmission shifts to another level.
