2018 BMW X5 vs Audi Q5
There’s something empowering about taking an SUV through the streets of Manhattan, Bronx, and Queens. These commanding vehicles offer a dominating presence on the road with their higher viewing position and imposing size. Couple that with their powerful engines and generous interior space, and you have a vehicle you’ll always enjoy driving.
If you’re eyeing a more luxurious model, consider the 2018 BMW X5 and the Audi Q5. Both SUVs are packed full of exciting features, but only one fits your needs the best. Find out which in our comprehensive BMW X5 vs. Audi Q5 comparison.
BMW X5 vs Audi Q5: Interior
The most drastic difference between these two SUVs is the seating capacity. The Q5 holds five people comfortably, but the BMW X5 features a third row, pushing the seating capacity all the way to seven. That extra row is possible, even though the X5 is only about 10 inches longer than the Q5. Despite the extra space, headroom and legroom measurements for all passengers are generally the same.
While you’ll find advanced infotainment systems inside both, the X5’s tends to be a bit more intuitive. The first thing you’ll probably notice about it is its 10.2-inch screen. The Q5 has a touchscreen too, but it’s nowhere near that big. The X5’s user interface is a bit easier to use as well, allowing you to switch between touching the screen directly or using the available dial.
BMW X5 vs Audi Q5: Safety
SUVs are fun to drive, but they do tend to be top-heavy by design. That means you need an SUV with safety features in place that can protect you and your passengers. When it comes to features like roll mitigation, both vehicles have you covered, but the BMW X5 goes the extra mile. You can enjoy the benefits of emergency communications systems like BMW Assist eCall with Emergency Request & Enhanced Automatic Collision Notification. The Q5 can’t offer the same.
In terms of collision protection, however, both SUVs are virtually the same. After numerous crash tests by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, each vehicle here earned a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating.
BMW X5 vs Audi Q5: Power
Having a comfortable and safe ride is always great, but there’s no thrill quite like driving with a powerful engine. You’ll find impressive power with both, but the Q5 can’t quite keep up with the BMW X5. Audi’s SUV features a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder that offers 252 horsepower with 273 lb-ft of torque. While impressive, the standard X5 offers a 3.0-liter turbocharged 6-cylinder that pushes 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque.
If that’s not enough power for you in the Q5, there’s not much you can do about it; there’s only one engine option across all trim levels. Meanwhile, the X5 can be enhanced with a 4.4-liter twin turbo V8. When equipped with that monster, the X5 produces 445 horsepower with 480 lb-ft of torque.
