BMW X5 vs Lexus RX: Get Comfortable in Manhattan Traffic

We’re not being facetious here—we literally mean you can sit in traffic comfortably when you’re in the X5 and the RX. With high-quality, soft touch materials, including leather upholstery and wood trim in the X5, you can enjoy spending some extra time in these cabins.

Plus, with plenty of passenger space, even your backseat riders will be happy. Both vehicles offer at least 37.4 inches of legroom, so your taller riders will be good to stretch out on longer drives.

Additionally, each passenger in the BMW X5 can travel just as comfortably since the dimensions are shared equally among front and rear passengers. Although, you’ll see that some passengers may not travel as comfortably in the RX as they would in the X5.

BMW X5 vs. Lexus RX: Interior Dimensions

Headroom (front/rear)

40.7/40.7 inches

39.4/39.1 inches

Shoulder Room (front/rear)

60/58.1 inches

57.8/57.6 inches

When it comes to cargo space, the X5 takes the lead here, too. With 33.9 cubic feet of space behind the back seat, you’ll easily load up the kids’ sports gear or extra luggage bags. Unfortunately, the RX falls significantly behind here, offering only 18.4 cubic feet of space.

You can fold the rear seats of the Lexus RX down to obtain a maximum cargo capacity of 56.3 cubic feet, but that still can’t compete with the maximum 72.3 cubic feet of cargo space in the BMW X5.

BMW X5 Engine Specs

BMW X5 vs Lexus RX: Power & Performance

We have to give the BMW X5 the win for this category, as well. With three different turbocharged options, the X5 offers immense power for your drives. For example, the base engine is a 3.0L BMW TwinPower Turbocharged 6-cylinder that produces 335 horsepower.

The RX lags here, with only one engine option: a 3.5L V6 that puts out 295 horsepower. It’s still not a bad choice, but not as powerful as the X5 base engine.

However, if you wanted to make your Lexus RX a hybrid vehicle, you can upgrade to their Engine + Lexus Multistage Hybrid System for more power. Although, even with this multistage hybrid engine you’ll still get left in the dust of the BMW X5.

All around, the BMW X5 is a more powerful option for your travels around the city.

Fuel Economy

We know that when you’re stuck in traffic, you’re probably tired of watching your fuel levels drop. Doesn’t it seem like sometimes you just filled up your SUV and you have to again? Luckily, both the X5 and RX provide a fuel economy that limits your time at the pump.

To compare apples to apples, we’ll look at the EPA-estimated MPGs for the all-wheel drive systems.

While both vehicles share the same highway MPG, when it comes to city travel, BMW drivers will be able to travel longer distances with ease in comparison to the Lexus RX.

BMW X5 vs Lexus RX: Interior Features

When you opt for a luxury vehicle, we’re sure you’re looking for the latest in technology features. Luckily, both the X5 and RX come standard with easy-to-use infotainment systems via a 12.3-inch display in the X5. While a screen of the same size is offered with the Lexus RX, this is only available with a trim level upgrade.

Speaking of trim levels, you’ll be interested to learn that the RX has six trim levels in comparison to the BMW X5. Instead of focusing on the number of trim levels offered, the X5 focuses on the quality of materials used in each trim.

Here’s a list of features that come standard with the BMW X5 that are aimed at improving your comfort that only come with an upgraded trim level on the Lexus RX:

  • Heated front seats
  • Ambient lighting
  • Panoramic glass roof
  • Power tailgate

In addition to comfort features, you’ll also find that your luxury SUV is equipped with advanced safety features to help keep you safe and secure from Point A to Point B. With BMW, their comprehensive safety suite is known as Active Driving Assistant. With Lexus, it’s called the Lexus Safety System+ 2.0.

BMW X5 vs. Lexus RX: Safety Features

BMW Active Driving Assistant

  • Daytime Pedestrian Protection
  • Frontal Collision Warning with City Collision Mitigation
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Active Blind Spot Detection
  • Rear Cross Traffic Alert

Lexus Safety System+ 2.0

  • Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
  • Lane Tracing Assist
  • Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist
  • Road Sign Assist
  • All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
  • Intelligent High Beams

At first glance, it may seem like both safety systems are equally comprehensive, but that’s before we share information on the BMW Active Protection System—a feature with no similar offering in the Lexus RX.

This system uses sensors to detect that a collision is unavoidable. With this extra layer of safety protection, all windows will close, post-crash braking will enable, and all seatbelts will be pretensioned.

As you can see, when you choose the BMW X5 over the Lexus RX, you’ll have a far more comprehensive safety suite to help keep you safe.

BMW X5 vs Lexus RX: The Results

Although both the BMW X5 and Lexus RX are great options when choosing your next luxury SUV, with the X5 model’s awesome interior and cargo space, engine options, and technology features, we’d have to choose this one for a test drive.
